Bort

Sylvia A. Bort, 86, of Prairietown, Ill., passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024. She was born on February 7, 1938 to the late Theodore and Cordelia Heine Bunte. Sylvia married Fred G. Bort on June 13, 1959.

Sylvia grew up in Prairietown on a farm with her sisters. She attented St. Peter’s Lutheran School and church in Prairietown. She graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1956. She worked as a secretary for St. Peter’s Lutheran Sunday school for 25 years, a member of Ladies Aid, Choir, and became a stay at home mother soon after having her children. She loved to cook, sew, and embroider, and quilt.

Sylvia is survived by her husband; sister, Connie (Gerald) Schaefer, Prairietown; four children, Mary (Steve) Hobos, Meriden, Kan., Melinda (Sam) McIntyre, Conroe, Texas, Marina Bettorf, Bunker Hill, and Fred (Mary) Bort, New Ross, Ind .; 14 grandchildren, Amanda Gautheir, Andrew (Nicole) Hobus, Isaiah (Erica) Hobus, Seth (Ashley) McIntyre, Joel (Abbey)McIntyre, Amy Cotton, Amber Gieseking, Brittany (Kyle) Lucas, Fred Nicholas Bort; Kole (Ally) Bort, Kamron Bort, Kala (Morgan) Pepper, Karley Hovermale (Jim Marsh), and Ben Hovermale; 23 great-grandchildren, Ezra, Aviva, Alice Gautheir, Brooklyn, Andrew, Matthew Hobus, Auden and Arlo McIntyre, Joel McIntyre, Olivia Bacca, Nolan and Sylvia Cotton, Kennedy, Kobie, Kamie, and Krosby Gieseking, Olivia Pepper, Calvin Marsh, Natassia and Nick Brown, Felecia and Ryan Herman, Aaron and Saleen Lucas; three great-great-grandchildren, Liana Herman, Lucas Herman, and Shiloh Lucas; many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Zeke (Oscar) Bettorf; mother and father-in-law, Fred and Edith Bort; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice (Robert) Hill and Linda (Dennis) Hartley; brothers and sister-in-laws, Bruce and Irene Bort, Jerald and Joyce Bort, Helena and Walther DeMoss.

Services were May 3, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with interment at Prairietown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and school.
