Cross Country grinds through weather to complete season

Staunton High School Cross Country has completed their 2023 Season. On Oct. 21, the team traveled to Trenton to participate in Regionals. Even though neither team qualified for sectionals as a team, both teams had a great showing.

The girls results were as follows: Mallory Lucykow (23:59); Elsah Clark (26:18); Lydia Larosa (26:20, PR); Cheyenne Butcher (26:27); Brooke Rucker (30:25); Olivia Matesa (30:45); and Lauryn Sternickle (32:14). Two boys, Rhyse Rucker (junior) and Peyton Luketich (freshman) both qualified for sectionals during the Regional Race.

The boys results were as follows: Peyton Luketich (17:56); Rhyse Rucker (18:14), Aiden Green (18:57), Thomas Ogata (19:40), Bryan Podwojski (20:12), Jaydon Hausman (20:57), and Trevor Myers (21:00). Both boys and girls teams took home nineth place as a team, but unfortunately only the top seven teams advanced to sectionals.

The following Saturday, on Oct. 28, Rhyse Rucker and Peyton Luketich traveled to Benton, Ill., to participate in the IHSA Class 1A XC Sectional Race. Despite cold and rainy weather conditions, some members of the cross country team, as well as the high school principal, Ms. Griffith, traveled to support the boys.

Rhyse and Peyton ran side by side the entire race, watching out for one another in the slippery conditions. They finished 57th (Rhyse, time of 17:24:40), and 58th (Peyton, time of 17:25:70) out of 162 runners. Both Rhyse and Peyton participated in three high school sports seasons this fall - Cross Country, Soccer, and Golf.
