Bulldogs lose in shut-out to Greenville

The Staunton High School Bulldogs were scheduled to play their first game of the season at home. Everyone there would agree that the best decision made that day was to move the game and play it on the new turf field in Greenville. Playing that game on such a rain drenched night would have completely destroyed Staunton's grass field.

The Comets scored a TD early but had it called back on a holding penalty and were then forced to punt. Staunton was able to make a couple first downs in their first possession but that ended in a punt.

Greenville scored on this next possession and took a 6-0 lead.

Nate Oller returned the Comet kick-off and the Bulldogs made a first and 10 on a Sternickle to Tretteneero pass play. However that drive stalled and Staunton turned the ball over on downs.

The Comets scored again on their next possession. Their try for the PAT failed but Greenville held a 12-0 lead. Still in the first half, the Comets would score two more touchdowns and the halftime score stood at 25-0.

In the 3rd quarter, the Comets scored another TD, ran for the two point conversion and extended their lead to 33-0. Still in the 3rd quarter, the Comets would score a TD, add the PAT and led Staunton 40 - 0 which automatically started the running clock. The game ended with Greenville winning 40-0.

The Staunton stat guys were on the field - in the pouring rain - trying to keep perfect stat sheets. If there is a mistake this week in the paper, we hope you will forgive them and us and knowing it is truly just a mistake. Feel free to call and correct us - we just ask that you remember - we were humans working in really bad conditions.
