Softball girls start season with 4 wins

 


Coach Jen Abert and the Staunton High School softball girls started their season with 3 wins over Nokomis, Auburn and Roxana before losing to Carrollton.

They started March 14 with a 6-5 win over Nokomis.

Nokomis 0 - 0 - 0 -1 - 3 - 1 - 0 = 5

Staunton 2 - 1 - 1- 0 - 1 - 1 - x = 6

Staunton runs were scored by Ele Feldman (2), Kylie Lucykow, Lilly Bandy, Savannah Billings and Taylor Nolan (1 ea.). Feldman led in hitting with 3. RBIs were credited to Bandy, Whitney Weller, Billings and Nolan.

Billings pitched 5 innings. She struck out 4, walked 8, gave up 1 hit and 4 runs (3 earned). Feldman pitched 2 innings, struck out 3, walked 1, gave up 4 hits and 1 run.

On March 15, the girls defeated Auburn 6-2.

Auburn .... 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 = 2

Staunton ... 0 - 0 - 0 - 3 - 2 - 1 - x = 6

Staunton RBIs were credited to Lucykow, Evin Frank, Nolan and Koral Keehner.

Feldman and Billings again shared pitching duties. Feldman pitched 3 innings, struck out 4, walked 3, gave up 2 hits and 2 runs. Billings was on the mound for 4 innings. She struck out 2, walked 1, gave up 3 hits and 0 runs.

On March 21, the Bulldogs narrowly defeated Roxana 3-2 with a run in the 8th inning.

Roxana held a 2-0 lead until the 5th when Staunton scored 1. The Lady Bulldogs scored again in the 7th and 8th to make it 3 while holding the Shells to 2.

Staunton RBIs were by Frank, Feldmann and Billings.

Billings and Nolan were on the mound for Staunton. They struck out 6, walked 3 and gave up 2 runs.

Their first loss of the season came on March 28 vs. the Carrollton Hawks. This was an exciting game with the lead changing hands several times. Unfortunately, the game ended with the Hawks ahead 15-13.

Carrollton ...0 - 0 - 9 - 0 - 0 -5 -1 = 15

Staunton 1 - 0 - 0 - 7 - 2- 0 -3 =13

Staunton runs were scored by Lucykow, Bandy and Weller (3 ea.), Lilly Troeckler, Feldmann, Billings and Nolan (1 ea.). RBIs were credited to Frank (3), Billings (2), Feldmann, Bandy, Weller and Nolan (1 ea.).

Feldmann and Billings shared pitching duties. Feldmann pitched 2.2 innings, struck out 1, walked 2, gave up 10 hits and 9 runs. Billings pitched 4.1 innings, gave up 9 hits and 6 runs.

On Tuesday, March 29, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Jersey 15-5 in six innings.

Jersey 1 - 0 - 3 - 1 - 0 - 0 = 5

Staunton ..1 - 2 - 6- 0 - 4 - 2=15

Staunton runs were scored by Lucykow, Frank, Feldmann, Bandy, McKenzie Wofford, and Nolan (2 ea); Troeckler, Weller, and Billings (1 ea.).

RBIs were credited to Keehner (4), Bandy and Frank (3 ea.), Wofford and Weller (2 ea.), and Lucykow.

Gianna Bianco pitched all 6 innings. She struck out 2, walked 2, gave up 10 hits and 5 runs.

Last week, the Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play Triad on Thursday and were at Pawnee on Saturday. This week they play Carlinville on Monday, April 4, and Marquette (Alton) today, April 6, both at home.

They go to Mulberry Grove Thursday, April 7, to Hillsboro on Friday, April 8, and are home vs. Pana on April 12.
