Roosevelt Financial Group Inc., the holding company for Roosevelt Bank, announced on Dec. 23 that they will merge with Mercantile Bank. The merger will be completed in mid-1997.

Staunton resident Elmer C. Bruce decided not to run for a county board seat after serving for 34 years on the Macoupin County Board.

The bell at Zion Lutheran Church tolled 150 times on New Year’s Day to usher in their 150th anniversary year.

The old KC Hall was remodeled and owner Barbara Hayes has opened the establishment as a restaurant, Spring Street Inn, featuring family-style home-cooked meals.

William E. Krug (95) of Staunton died Dec. 25 at Community Memorial Hospital.

John Walter Wilson (25) of Livingston died Dec. 23 at Bethesda Hospital in St. Louis.

Anthony Paul Cerentano (61) of Mt. Olive died Dec. 23 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Dorothy S. (Schumacher) Miller (91) of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Staunton, died Dec. 21 in Scottsdale.

Lily M. (Metcalf) Herr (89) of Waynesville, N.C., formerly of Staunton died Dec. 24 at Autumn Care.

Mary Veronica Sebescak (93) of Gillespie, formerly of Walshville, died Dec. 29 at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.
