At Bunker Hill High School, a U.S. History Teacher is hosted a classic, 1950's block party in his class to encourage engagement and to put aside any pre-conceieved notions that history class is "boring."
Mr. Banwart took some mere lessons on the 1950's era with Levittown and the booming subuurbs migration and created something, that won't necessarily go in one ear and come directly out the other. He provided classroom activites among the class and groups while everyone else did their part and participated by dressing for the role that is the 1950's.
For some history teachers, it can by hard to break away from the mold of seminar and power point lesson teaching about history because it can be hard to maintain focus in a classroom when stepping outside that mind frame. What Mr. Banwart did is not only just a history lesson on a generation in time, but he made it an entire experience for these students.
When they reminisnce on their high school years and the experiences they went through, without a doubt, this is something that will roll across the their heads and provide them great memories of a history lesson that didn't glue their eyes and ears shut, but instead motivated them to be more receptive to the prospect of history class having the ability to ignite curious insights and potential experiences.
