Barton

David C. Barton, 85, of Annandale, Va., (a suburb of Washington D.C.), died on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022. He was born on Aug. 13, 1937, to Lester and Lucile Barton, a dentist and a homemaker, respectively.

The family moved to Staunton when David was 6 years old. David graduated from Staunton High School in 1955, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1959 with a B.S. in Liberal Arts. After training in ROTC, he joined the U.S. Army in 1960. He married Peggy Putt of Lebanon, Ill., in 1960. He served active duty in the U.S. Army for 14 years, and later retired as a Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves. During his career, including Army and later Civil Service, he served in Germany, Vietnam, Taiwan, and various posts in the U.S., including the Pentagon. He retired in 2000, with 40 years service with the U.S. Department of Army. He had great interest in cars, airplanes, photography, and military history.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; three daughters, Judy, Sarah, and Dorothy; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren; plus extended family and friends from many communities.

Funeral services have been held in Virginia. There will be a memorial service in the spring in Lebanon, Ill. Burial will be in Nashville, Ill., with his parents and grandparents.
