SHS golfers in Sectional play

Staunton's Preston Denney and Luke DeWitt competed in the IHSA Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional at the Effingham Country Club on Monday, Oct. 17, with both players finishing in the top 30 individually. Denny finished tied for 21st, shooting an 83 on the day with a 41 on the front nine and a 42 on the back half of the course, highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 10th hole. DeWitt was just two strokes behind his teammate as he tied for 28th with an 85, shooting a 44 on the front and a 41 on the back, with birdies on the par-5 third hole and the par-4 13th hole. The two Staunton golfers just missed out on a five-way playoff for the final three individual state qualifying spots, which went to Anna Jonesboro's Aidan McFadden, Altamonte's Avery Jahraus and Mt. Carmel's Kollin Kelsey, who all shot 82s in regulation.
