Hamfest at county fairgrounds on Aug. 13

August 3, 2022

Amateur radio operators and radio controlled model plane enthusiasts from across West Central Illinois and beyond will be converging on the Macoupin County Fairgrounds in Carlinville Saturday, Aug. 13, for a family-oriented event reflecting the cross-over interest in radio communications shared by both popular hobbies.

The gathering is jointly sponsored by the Macoupin County Amateur Radio Club, the Springfield-based Sangamon Valley Radio Club, the Okaw Valley Radio Club in Greenville, the Montgomery County Radio Club, Hillsboro, and the Springfield based Sangamon Valley Radio Controlled Flyers under the umbrella of the annual "West Central Illinois Hamfest."

Running from 7 a.m. until noon, the event–sanctioned by the national organizations of both groups–ARRL (Amateur Radio Relay League and the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics), will include displays, seminars, an indoor and outdoor flea market, radio controlled aircraft exhibits, prize drawings, amateur radio license testing and more.

Admission is $5, children 16 and under, free. The Macoupin County Fairgrounds are located at 21149 Route 4 in Carlinville.

Hourly forums start at 8 a.m. with a presentation on the construction of amateur radio antennas, followed at 9 a.m. by a visual tour of nationally-known ham radio operator Craig Thompson's K9CT Contest Station in Tivioli, Ill. At 10 a.m., the Sangamon Valley Radio Controlled Flyers club will talk about their activities that include regular flights of their radio controlled airplanes at Holmes Field south of Lake Springfield. At 11 a.m., Thom Bebee, Manager for ARRL's Illinois Section, will provide a roundup of the League's state and national activities.

Breakfast and lunch will be available.
