Retiring city council members Danny Masinelli, Norm Ruffini and Betty Sternickle were given plaques of recognition for their community service. Outgoing mayor Wayne Heinemeyer was also honored.

Donna Machuga and Joseph Eddington were married Dec. 28, 1996, in Staunton.

Angeline Patla (84) of Livingston died April 29 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Pearl Sarah Basso Norberg (78) of Port Charlotte, Fla., died April 1 at a senior facility.

Josephine M. Grandame (80) of Highland, formerly of Gillespie, died May 2 at Faith Countryside Homes Nursing Center.

Evelyn Bourgeois (89) of Crawfordville, Fla., formerly of Staunton, died Jan. 23 at Tallahassee, Fla.

Elton W. Bloemker (78) of Staunton died May 5 at Community Memorial Hospital.

The Duckwall-Alco Company announced that the Alco store in Staunton is slated to open in August.

The old bronze bell from the South School was dedicated at its new location at Staunton Elementary.

Kathy and Kenny Highlander of Houston, Texas, announced the birth of their daughter on March 20.
