Helen M. Maedge, 95, of Staunton, Ill., died on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, at Heritage Health in Gillespie. She was born on March 5, 1927, in Hillsboro, the daughter of Warren and Nellie (Malloy) Lyerla. She married Robert E. Maedge, Sr., on Feb. 20, 1946, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis in St. Louis, Mo. He preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 2015.

Helen was an administrative assistant for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Staunton and was previously a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livingston.

Helen is survived by two sons, Robert (Jorene) Maedge Jr., of Staunton, Mark (Karen) Maedge of Benson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Aaron Maedge of Lafayette, Ind., Tami Ponce de Leon of Sacramento, Calif., Nicole Duncan of Colonial Heights, Va., Alison Maedge of San Diego, Calif.; one great-granddaughter; three great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Eric Maedge; a sister, Annie Hooker; and three brothers, Lee Martin, Warren Lyerla, and Lyle Lyerla.


A private funeral mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livingston with Fr. Thomas Hagstrom officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery near Livingston.

Memorials may be made to ProMedica (formerly Heartland) Hospice. Lesicko Funeral Home in Livingston, assisted by Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton, was in charge of arrangements.
