Scanzoni resigns from city council

by Kelly Costa During Monday’s city council meet- ing, the council approved a resolution appointing Terry Tipler to the position of Ward 4 alderman for the city of Staunton. Immediately following the resolution approval, the oath of office was administered to Tipler. This ac- tion was required after the city council received a letter of resignation due to a residency change from Ward 4 Alder- man Jeffrey Scanzoni dated Aug. 18, 2022. Scanzoni’s resignation was ef-

fective immediately.

In correspondence, the council re-

ceived an email from the Staunton Chamber of Commerce requesting to close Main Street from Edwardsville to Union on Friday evening, Dec. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Christmas tree lighting and Snack with Santa. They also asked to keep Main Street closed from Wood to Elm from 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 until 8 a.m. on Dec. 3. The council approved the request.

The treasurer reported that CDs were

recently cashed at Bank of Springfield: Infrastructure Fund - $500,000 plus $1,551.80 interest; General Fund - $150,000 plus $465.55 interest; Tele- communications Fund - $200,000 plus $620.72 interest; Civic Improvement Fund - $100,000 plus $310.37 interest; Water Fund - $100,000 plus $310.37 interest; Sewer Fund - $175,000 plus $543.14 interest; Depreciation Fund - $50,000 plus $155.18 interest.

City Clerk Dennis Stiegemeier an- nounced that the Gubernatorial Disaster Proclamation has been extended through Sept. 17, 2022, which allows public meetings to be held remotely. Also, the onsite audit work has been finished by the auditor.

In Public Health and Safety, the council approved a quote from Axon Enterprise, Inc. for body cameras for the police department for $20,000.

In Judiciary, the council approved an Intergovernmental Agreement to trans- fer property from the State of Illinois Department of Natural Resources to the City of Staunton. This property is Parcel #3 of the former Consolidation Coal Company #14.

The first reading was given for Ordi- nance #2172 authorizing an agreement for the purchase of the property at 104 East Main Street owned by Danny Ves- per for $50,000.

First readings were given for ordi- nances allowing charity roadblocks by the Elbon Shrine Club to conduct their newspaper drive on Oct. 15 and Staunton Knights of Columbus to conduct their annual Tootsie Roll Drive on Sept. 17.

State of Illinois - Video Gaming Tax $11,468.09; Telecommunications Tax $4,898.01; Can- nabis Use Tax $815.12; State Use Tax $15,761.56; Income Tax $40,976.08; MFT Tax $9,988.35; MFT Renewal Fund $7,547.63;

Ameren Illinois - Utility Tax $22,974.03;

Music Performance Trust Fund - Band Reimbursement $3,150.

Those present for the meeting were Mayor Craig Neuhaus, City Clerk Dennis Stiegemeier, Public Works Director Mike Kuethe, Police Chief Jeff Doerr, alder- men Ryan Machota, John Moore, David Manning, David Dias, and Terry Tipler. Alderman Rick Johnson attended electronically. City Treasurer Cindy Pirok, City Attorney Phil Lading, aldermen Chad Plenske and Randy Hanks were absent. The next city council meeting will be on Monday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.
