Carlinville man victim of fatal hit and run

Carlinville Police were called at 7:11 a.m. Saturday to the 1100 block of Sumner Street. Monteaz Walton, 40, was found in the road lying in a puddle in a fetal-like position on his side. Officers started life-saving measures until Carlinville Fire Protection District and Gillespie Benld Area Ambulance Service members arrived. The Macoupin County coroner was called and pronounced Walton dead at the scene.

An autopsy performed on Saturday determined Walton had died from injuries suffered when he was hit by a vehicle.

On Monday, a 19-year-old man turned himself in to the police with his attorney present. The man is being held at Macoupin County Jail pending formal charges.

Police said they have applied for the charge of leaving the scene/failure to report death or injury within half an hour. The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
