Bulldogs defeated Panthers

Senior #14 Cayden Silvester makes the catch in center field at the end of the game vs. Pana. He was also the starting pitcher for 5 innings to get the 7-3 conference win.

On Tuesday, April 12, the Staunton High School baseball team defeated Pana 7-3.

After Pana scored 1 run in the top of the first, Staunton rallied with 5 runs in the bottom and added another 2 in the bottom of the second to take the 7-1 lead. Pana added 1 run in the 3rd and 4th, but that ended the scoring with the Bulldogs ahead 7-3.

Staunton runs were scored by Sam Best, Trace Trettenero, Matthew Sievers, Cody Ury, Dillon Pritchett, Luke Meyer, and Luke Dewitt, 1 ea. Silvester led the hitting with 3 followed by Sievers and Sternickle with 2 ea., Best, Ury and Meyer with 1 ea. RBIs were credited to Sternickle 3 and Silvester 4.

Silvester was on the mound for the first 5 innings. He struck out 12, walked 1, gave up 3 hits and 3 (unearned) runs. Meyer closed for the Bulldogs, pitching the last 2 innings. He struck out 1, walked 0, gave up 1 hit and no runs.

On Saturday, April 16, the Bulldogs lost to Civic Memorial (Bethalto) in a 6-inning game.


Staunton started out strong with a 3-run first inning but were only able to add one in the 5th for their 4-run total. CM scored 1 in the first, 5 in the second, 3 in the 4th and 3 in the 6th to win the game 14-4 in 6 innings.

Sophomore #15 Cole Sternickle is ready at first base to make the play.

Staunton runs were scored by Best 2, Pritchett 1 and Sievers 1. Best led the hitting with 3, Sievers had 2 and Silvester had 1 hit. RBIs were credited to Silvester, Sternickle and Sievers.

Brady Gillen and Pritchett shared pitching duties. Gillen pitched 3 innings, struck out 1, walked 3, gave up 8 hits and 11 runs (7 earned). Pritchett pitched 2.1 innings, walked 5, gave up 2 hits and 3 runs.

This game brought the Bulldogs' season record to 4-7. They were scheduled to play at Vandalia on Tuesday, April 19; at EA/WR on Wednesday, April 20; home vs. Greenville, April 22nd, and at North Mac on April 25. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
