Hunter is the son of Chris and Ellen Mathenia. While in high school, Hunter participated in football and trap all four years of high school. He was a member of the FFA. During his senior year, he participated in the workplace experience program and worked at Brubaker-Schmitt Chevrolet.

His plans after high school are to attend Ranken Technical College to get an associates degree in General Motors mechanics.
