Superintendent search begins

March 16, 2022

During a special Staunton Board of Education meeting held on Monday, March 7, Interim Superintendent Michael Kelly reported that the Illinois Association of School Boards, the firm conducting the search for a new superintendent, had sent out a survey for staff, parents and the public. It was also decided that Kelly will host an event for the public to offer suggestions on the search at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, at the unit library.

The members of the school board realize that the selection of a new superintendent is probably the most important decision they will make and value input from parents and the public to assist in the process.

In other business, B.J. Ogata, the Staunton High School track coach, informed the members of the board of education of the track team's plans to use the Staunton Invite, scheduled for April 15, as an opportunity to partner with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation for a fund-raising event in support of cancer research.

Ogata reported he was working to ensure the funds generated would be used appropriately and when possible, locally.

Nancy Werden, the district's educational services coordinator, reported on a recent review the Illinois State Board of Education had conducted on the School Nutrition Program. She reported the review had gone well. She also reported the district had submitted a corrective action plan to address the few concerns noted in the review.

As a result, some new equipment will be purchased for the kitchen area, and student meal prices for 2022-2023 will be set at $1.75 for breakfast, $2.86 for lunch, and a carton of milk will cost $0.35. For adults, a breakfast will cost $2.50, lunch will cost $3.75, and a carton of milk will be $0.35.

After closed session, the board employed Caroline S. Leathers as a bus secretary/aide effective March 7, 2022.
