The Staunton 8th Grade Terriers wrapped up their season last week at the East St. Louis Class 3A Regional. The Terriers came into postseason play as the #4 seed and faced #5 Greenville in the first round on Saturday, Jan. 29. SJHS played well and avenged an earlier loss to the Jays in a 30-23 victory. Carter Legendre led the way with 12 points. He was joined in the scoring column by Cason Kapp (6 pts.), Ashton Rizzi (4 pts.), Bryce Coalson (4 pts.), Aaron Bodner (2 pts.), and Cole Rather (2 pts.).

The Terriers moved on to face #1 seed Vandalia on Monday. Staunton played very well defensively and held on for a 28-23 upset victory. Legendre dominated down low while posting 17 points to lead all scorers. Rizzi (8 pts.) and Bodner (3 pts.) also scored for Staunton.

The upset win over Vandalia earned Staunton a spot in the championship game on Tuesday against #3 seed and host East St. Louis Lincoln. Unfortunately, Lincoln jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back in a 47-19 win. Coalson led the way with 11 points (including three 3’s). Rizzi, Bodner, Kapp, and Legendre each posted 2 points to wrap up the season’s scoring.

Staunton finished the season with a 12-9 record against a formidable schedule. The team also captured its second straight 2-M Conference title. The Terriers roster included #2 Logan Tuetken, #3 Ashton Rizzi, #5 Braden Pfeiffer, #10 Carson Dugger, #11 Brody Hill, #12 Nate Oller, #13 Aaron Bodner, #14 Elliot Frank, #15 Cason Kapp, #20 Bryce Coalson, #32 Matthew Overby, #34 Reese Bohlen, #35 Carter Legendre, #41 Cole Rather, and manager Quincy Laux.
