The Staunton Junior High School Principal, Dr. John Griffith, died unexpectedly on Thursday night, Feb. 3. The school district made the announcement on Friday, Feb. 4. School was not in session at the time due to the snow storm on Wednesday and Thursday.

Griffith began his duties at Staunton Junior High at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

Before coming to Staunton, he served as an administrator in the Harmony-Emge School District in Belleville. He had previously been an administrator in Collinsville, and prior to that he was a teacher in Baton Rouge, La., and in the Chicago area. He and his wife Alicia were currently living in Maryville.

The administration had mental health professionals available for counseling of students or staff members when in-person learning resumed on Monday.

The school district statement regarding Griffith's death said in part, "Although John's tenure with Staunton Schools was very brief, he left a positive impact on both the students and the community. This loss is a devastating event for his family, the school district and the Staunton community. Our thoughts and concerns go out to his family during this difficult time."
