Jim J. Ulrich, 88, of Staunton, Ill., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at Heritage Health in Staunton. Born Aug. 8, 1933, in New Douglas, he was a son of the late Irvin and Helen (Shields) Ulrich. He married Ann Hetzel on Aug. 23, 1969. She survives.
Jim graduated from Staunton High School in 1951 and worked at Olin Corporation in East Alton from 1951 until he retired in 1994. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957. As a young man, he played baseball and basketball and loved to go fishing and hunting. He participated in many trap shooting events and was very proficient in the sport. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #560 in New Douglas. Upon retirement, he began to do scroll sawing and loved woodworking as a hobby. He and his wife Ann enjoyed taking his woodworking projects to various craft shows for many years. In the summer, he enjoyed taking care of the yard and gardening.
In addition to his wife, Ann, he is survived by a daughter, Susan (David) Woodcock of Brighton Colo .; a grandson, Justin Woodcock of Brighton, Colo. (currently serving in the U.S. Navy); a sister, Darlene Hosto of Mt. Olive; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Private graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 7, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton with Rev. Debbie Jo Atkins officiating.
