Stories from the files of the Staunton Star-Times in years gone by.

Thursday, September 1, 1966 -- GOING UP -- The new steeple which is part of the remodeling project at the First Methodist church in Staunton was hoisted into place Monday, the work being done under the supervision of the Opel Construction Co., of Worden, using the large crane owned and operated by Ernest Berg of Staunton. The upper portion of the steeple is covered with copper sheeting, and presents an imposing appearance.

The remodeling of the church includes, in addition to the new steeple, a new front entrance and foyer, and the entire front of the church to be brick veneered. When the remodeling is completed, the building will enhance the scenery at the corner of Main and Hibbard streets.

Thursday, September 8, 1966 -- FOOTBALL TEAM GETS READY FOR NEW SEASON -- Coach Fred Brenzel and his assistants, Bob Chiti and Larry Richardson, are conducting daily workouts in an effort to whip into shape the 1966 edition of the Staunton high school Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are determined to maintain the tradition established in the past eight years, that of winning the South Central Conference title. Seven of these years resulted in undisputed championships, and in the other season they tied for the honor. During those eight years Mr. Brenzel has been the head coach, and he has established quite a reputation in Central Illinois as a successful football mentor.

Although fourteen of the lettermen of the 1965 team have been lost by graduation, ten stalwarts from the conference champions are again available and will form the nucleus of the 1966 squad. They are Lyndall Kleeman, Bob Karl, Dave Hall, Gary Friolo, Allen Culp, Bob Barnhart, Ed Hilmes, Brad Neuhaus, Tom Monschein and Dave Link. Members of the 1965 Sophomore and Freshman squads who are favored to win posts on the Varsity team are Brian Kinnikin, Gary Herbeck, Mark Skertich, Tommy Kolkovich, George Przymuzala, Mike Pintar, Phil Callovini and Larry Grabruck. As the practice sessions continue, it is expected that a number of other boys will be given consideration.

The two new assistant coaches, Bob Chiti and Larry Richardson, replace Jim Oettel and Bill Yates, who served last year. Mr. Chiti comes from Auburn, where he was a member of the high school coaching staff, and Mr. Richardson is from Charleston, Ky., receiving his BS degree from Austin Peay State College in Clarksville, Tenn. He will teach biology and earth science in addition to his coaching duties.

The 1966 Varsity schedule includes eleven games, including the annual jamboree, and seven of the regular games and the jamboree will be played on the local high school field. Season tickets will be available from students at $6.00 for the seven games (not including the jamboree). The single game admission price for adults is $1.00.

LITTLE LEAGUERS TO SEE GAME WEDNESDAY -- About 200 boys who participated in the Staunton Little League program this summer, accompanied by 20 adults, will go to St. Louis Wednesday evening of next week to attend a baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals at the new Busch Memorial Stadium.

The busses will leave the City Park at 6:00 o'clock, and the boys should be at the park prior to that time. Those who expect to make the trip should contact F.C. (Bud) Dietiker on or before Saturday of this week.

SUNDAY'S BIRD RACE FROM NEWBURG, MO. -- A total of 155 pigeons from nine lofts of L.S.L. Club members participated in Sunday's race. The birds had been shipped to Newburg, Mo., for release, an air-line distance of 140 miles. Strong northerly crosswinds prevailed and the winning birds were able to average only about 30 miles an hour.

The birds owned by the following members finished in the order named: Art Pollard of Litchfield; Bob Carlock of Hillsboro; Ralph Watson of Hillsboro; Lee Estell of Mt. Olive; Alex Chesney of Litchfield; Stan Runta of Gillespie; Elmer Regenhold of Staunton; Butch Scheller of Mt. Olive; and Kenny Everetts of Hillsboro.
